Carlos Mortensen was born to a Spanish mother and a Danish father. He was first a resident of Spain, but later on moved to U.S. in 1990's to pursue a career in poker. It was Madrid where he was first infixed to poker at the age of 15.He started playing chess at a local club, where he worked as a bartender. Once, he paid a visited to the club and saw people playing Texas hold'em game, and he could still remember the day: April 15, 1997. So I was game to try it.

He says “I lost the equivalent of seventy dollars that night, and it really bothered me.” Though, he was in cark, still made it to the club the next day and won for four consecutive days.

After this thrilling experience, Mortensen strongly decided to pursue poker as a career and moved America. His wife, Cecilia Reyes, who also is a poker player, travels with him for some tournaments in US and Europe to game by his side.

Poker Career:

Mortensen actually made his debut in the 1999 WSOP through his fellow Spanish players, but could only manage till half-way making around $50,000. He busted onto the poker world in the year 2001 where he took 3 consecutive 1st place finishes in major tournaments, culminating with his fabulous victory at the 32nd Annual World Series of Poker main event.

Carlos “El Matador” Mortensen gained good name for his performance in the 2001 WSOP main event, where he won $1.5 million.

Carlos also triumphed with $1 million at the 2004 Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship. He received 2 WSOP bracelets and won prize money over $3.6 million in live tournaments in 2005. He was the semi-finalist in the World Heads-Up Poker Championship - Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament’s second season.

In 2007, he acquired 11th position at the 2007 European Poker Tour Main Event in Monte Carlo, and is last poker pro to hand-on World Series of Poker Main Event.
